The full story
To Madyan came their brother Shuayb: worship Allah, give full measure and weight in justice, do not deprive people, and do not corrupt the earth after its setting right (7:85, 11:84–85). He warned that the livelihood they loved — trade — had become their trial: defrauding the measure.
The chiefs sneered: does your prayer command us to abandon our fathers’ gods or our wealth’s disposal? You are the forbearing, right-minded one — mockery dressed as praise (11:87). They threatened him: we will surely expel you and the believers unless you return to our creed — and demanded the torment if truthful (7:88, 26:187).
Shuayb answered with the merchant’s honesty: I seek only reform as I am able; my success is only through Allah — upon Him I rely and to Him I turn (11:88). He reminded them of Nuh, Hud, Salih and Lut — whose morning was not far (11:89).
When the term came, the people of the thicket denied — and the torment of the Shadow Day seized them: a canopy that was no shade but flame, then the blast, morning finding them lifeless in their homes (26:189, 11:94–95). Shuayb turned away: I conveyed and advised — how shall I grieve for disbelievers (7:93).
