The full story
Ayyub is named among the guided — patient, excellent in returning to Allah (38:41–44, 21:83–84). Affliction touched him long: commentators describe years of illness, lost wealth and buried children — yet his tongue stayed on praise, his heart on return. The Quran records no complaint, only a call.
The call was a masterpiece of manners: harm has touched me — and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful (21:83). No demand, no deadline, no why-me — just a statement of need before the All-Merciful. Allah answered: strike the ground with your foot — a cool washing-place and drink (38:42).
He was restored — family doubled with its like as mercy and reminder for worshippers (21:84, 38:43). An oath he had sworn in illness was fulfilled gently: take a bundle of grass and strike, breaking it without harming — Allah’s own legal exit for a righteous man’s rash vow (38:44).
The Quran’s verdict stands as his epitaph: indeed We found him patient — an excellent servant, ever returning (38:44). Patience with return, not patience with resentment, is the prophetic model.
