The full story
Ilyas stands in the Quran’s roll of messengers: indeed Ilyas was among the messengers (37:123). His people had exchanged the Best of creators for Baal — a named idol with priests, festivals and a city’s full devotion.
His call is preserved in one piercing question: do you call upon Baal and abandon the Best of creators — Allah, your Lord and your forefathers’ Lord (37:125–126)? Worship’s logic compressed to a single contrast: the made versus the Maker.
They denied him — and the verdict followed the pattern of every denied warner: they will surely be brought to punishment, except Allah’s sincere servants (37:127–128). The exception clause always stands: sincerity exempts from the sentence.
The Quran then does for Ilyas what it does for his fellow warners: We left for him remembrance among later generations — peace be upon the family of Yasin (37:129–130). A city’s rejection, eternity’s greeting.
