How to
Steps in order
- 1If harm is feared (signs or medical advice): skip fasts without guilt - track each day.
- 2Follow your scholars on makeup: qada day-for-day, plus fidyah where they add it.
- 3Keep prayer always: stand, sit, lie - gesture where needed; combine where valid.
- 4Replace taraweeh with short home sets or Quran-listening while nursing.
- 5At purity signs do ghusl and restart; finish qada before next Ramadan.
Fasting: the concession and its makeup
Pregnant and nursing women fearing harm - for themselves or the child, on medical advice or strong signs - may skip Ramadan fasts by the analogy of the traveler and the sick (Quran 2:185; the “Allah has lifted fasting from the pregnant and nursing” hadith - Abu Dawud/Tirmidhi/Nasai/Ibn Majah). The pregnancy itself is the hardship; no mother must “prove” damage by fasting into danger - dizziness, ketones, reduced fetal movement and doctor’s warning are each sufficient cause.
Makeup positions (present all, follow your scholars): qada only (make up day-for-day later - Hanafi-leaning majority practice), qada plus fidyah per day (Shafii/Hanbali detail where fear was for the child), or fidyah-only where chronic inability spans years (Maliki-leaning for extended nursing chains). Practical path: track every skipped fast in Ramadan, start qada in Shawwal’s cool short days, finish before next Ramadan, and feed per day wherever your scholars add fidyah. Vomiting, injections and drips follow our what-breaks-fast guide.
Prayer, taraweeh, and postpartum restart
Prayer never drops in pregnancy: pray standing while easy, seated on a chair or bed-edge when heavy, side-lying in ordered rest - gestures for ruku/sujood per our qasr-sick guide - and combine at home where valid rather than abandoning. Taraweeh is excused without guilt; replace with short home sets or Quran-listening while nursing (reward of intention plus remembrance). Mosque trips are optional in late pregnancy and early nursing - the home musalla with husband-led prayer carries full family reward.
Postpartum: nifas bleeding pauses prayer and fasting up to 40 days (our haiz-nifas guide); purity (dryness/white discharge) restarts worship with ghusl even on day ten. Missed Ramadan fasts from pregnancy-nursing chains are made up across the year - winter short days, Mondays-Thursdays, the nursing mother’s qada with baby in lap counts fully. Keep iron, hydration and sleep as worship-infrastructure: the mother who protects her health protects two worshippers.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can pregnant women skip fasting in Ramadan?
Yes, when harm is feared for mother or child - on medical advice or clear signs. The Prophet ﷺ lifted fasting from the pregnant and nursing (four Sunan collections). Track and make up later.
Do missed pregnancy fasts need qada or fidyah?
Positions vary: qada-only (majority practice), qada-plus-fidyah where fear was for the child, fidyah-only for chronic inability. Follow your scholars; finish qada before next Ramadan.
How do nursing mothers pray and do taraweeh?
Prayer stays always (seated/lying with gestures if needed); taraweeh is excused - short home sets or Quran-listening while nursing carry full reward of intention.
