New Muslim Guide: Shahada to First Prayer

The Shahada and the first purification

Becoming Muslim takes one step: sincerely say “Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah” (I testify none deserves worship but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger) with belief and resolve - with witnesses if easy, alone if needed; Allah accepts it instantly, and all past sins are wiped clean. Follow it with ghusl (full ritual bath - see our ghusl guide), and you start life fresh: no ceremony, fee or waiting period stands between you and Islam.

Then learn wudu and one prayer at a time - Fajr first, using our step-by-step namaz guide with transliteration. Pray what you can from day one even while learning: reciting Al-Fatiha slowly from memory or paper is valid while you memorise, and every clumsy early prayer is beloved effort, not failed worship.

The week-by-week path, family, names and myths

Week one: Shahada, ghusl, wudu, Fajr and the five prayer times. Weeks two to four: add the remaining prayers, Al-Fatiha memorisation, and the morning-evening adhkar. Month two: fasting basics before Ramadan, zakat essentials, halal food rules (our halal guide) and finding a local mosque and teacher. Month three: Quran reading (our makharij basics), seerah highlights - the Prophet’s life - and Muslim community bonds that carry converts through hard years.

Tell family gently and gradually - kindness to non-Muslim parents remains obligatory; you need not change your name unless it carries a forbidden meaning; circumcision for adult men follows medical-scholar advice, not urgency; and ignore myths (no “you must be perfect first”, no “past tattoos block Islam” - they don’t).
