Islamic Parenting (Tarbiyah): Raising Righteous Kids

The age stages and prayer training

The Prophet’s ﷺ developmental map: “Command children to pray at seven, discipline them for it at ten, and separate their beds” (Abu Dawud) - play-centered mercy before seven (he ﷺ shortened sermons for crying babies and raced with Aisha), instruction from seven to ten, accountability after ten, and friendship-style counsel from puberty (“O my son” of Luqman, 31:13-19, is the tone model). Bed-separation at ten guards modesty; “discipline” means proportionate, never-face, never-mark correction - his ﷺ own never-striking record governs every hand.

Salah training works by attachment, not fear: pray visibly, let toddlers imitate on tiny mats, praise every joined rakah, gift the first full Fajr-in-mosque, and use our prayer-times tool as the family clock. The child who loves the prayer’s people keeps the prayer; drill without warmth produces teenagers who pray only under surveillance.

Screens, schooling, teens and dua

Screens need a family constitution, not daily wars: no personal devices before need (many scholars advise ~13+ for smartphones), no devices in bedrooms overnight, shared passwords till maturity, pre-approved apps, and a weekly digital fast the parents also observe - hypocrisy (“my phone at dinner, yours confiscated”) voids all authority. Fill the vacuum deliberately: sports (swimming, archery, riding - the prophetic trio), masjid youth circles, earning projects, and nature beat every lecture on haram content.

Schooling choices (Islamic school, homeschooling, mainstream-plus-madrassa-evenings) follow the child’s fitrah and local reality - ask experienced parents, not slogans. Teens get Luqman-style dialogue: listen first, validate feelings, hold lines on prayer/modesty/company without rage, and apologise when wrong - the father who apologises raises children who repent.
