How to

Steps in order

  1. 1Learn both rights lists; start by giving yours before demanding theirs.
  2. 2At discord: private admonition first - calm, specific, God-conscious words.
  3. 3Then dignified distance; then arbitration with one arbiter per family.
  4. 4Observe all guardrails: no violence, humiliation, or financial abuse - ever.
  5. 5If harm persists: khula/counselling/legal protection; see our talaq guide.

Mutual rights: what each owes

Marriage is a “solemn covenant” (4:21) of reciprocal rights: husbands owe maintenance (housing, food, clothing by capacity - 65:7), kind companionship (4:19 - “live with them in kindness,” the verse divorce-proofing every mood), protection of honour and privacy, and measured intimacy; harshness, miserliness-with-means, and publicising bedroom secrets (cursed in Sahih Muslim) all violate the covenant. The Prophet ﷺ never struck a wife or servant (Sahih Muslim) - his example closes every “discipline” loophole harshness tries to open.

Wives owe reasonable obedience in lawful matters (4:34’s qiwamah as responsibility, not tyranny), guarding the home and honour in absence (4:34), and gratitude that notices provision - “the majority of Hell’s inmates” warning (Bukhari/Muslim) targets ingratitude toward husbands, a wake-up call not a worth-label. Both owe sexual availability within kindness (withholding as punishment is condemned - Bukhari/Muslim), loyalty, and the merciful love (30:21) that outlasts romance. Rights are claimed through giving first - the spouse who serves their list reforms the marriage fastest.

The 4-step conflict ladder - and its guardrails

Allah’s sequence for serious discord (nushuz - 4:34-35): one, admonition - calm, private, specific words about Allah and consequences, never screaming matches. Two, separation in bed - dignified distance signalling gravity, not silent-treatment warfare for months. Three, the symbolic strike - classically “non-violent, non-marking” and declared by the Prophet ﷺ himself as hated in practice (“those who do so are not the best of you” - Abu Dawud); contemporary scholars overwhelmingly counsel skipping to step four. Four, arbitration - one arbiter from each family mandated by verse 4:35, ideally before courts, with scholars and counsellors where needed.

Absolute guardrails: no face-striking, no marking, no humiliation, no financial strangulation, no dragging children as weapons - violation of these is oppression (zulm) answerable to Allah regardless of “rights” vocabulary. Wives facing harm have the khula exit (our talaq guide) plus family and legal protection; husbands facing disobedience have patience, counsel and arbitration before any step. The ladder’s goal at every rung is reconciliation (4:35 promises Allah will grant success to sincere arbiters) - climb to repair, never to punish.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are a husband’s duties to his wife?

Maintenance by capacity, kind companionship always (4:19), protection of honour and privacy, measured intimacy, and the Prophet’s example: never striking, insulting or humiliating.

Does Islam allow hitting wives?

Verse 4:34’s sequence ends in a symbolic act the Prophet ﷺ himself discouraged (“not the best of you”); scholars overwhelmingly counsel arbitration instead. Any violence, marking or humiliation is oppression, plainly forbidden.

How should Muslim couples resolve fights?

Allah’s ladder: calm admonition, dignified distance, then family arbiters from both sides (4:35) - plus scholars, counsellors and, where harm persists, khula or legal protection.
