How to
Steps in order
- 1Accept the ruling from its verses; separate Allah’s command from your struggle.
- 2Cover hair-to-ankle loose and opaque before all non-mahram men.
- 3Learn your mahram list; keep boundaries with cousins and in-laws.
- 4Add layers progressively; ask scholars workplace-specific cases.
- 5Fathers/husbands: advise and facilitate - never coerce.
The ruling and its evidence
Hijab is obligatory by decisive texts, not culture: “draw their headcovers over their chests” (24:31) commands covering hair, neck and bosom; “draw their outer garments over themselves” (33:59) commands the public cloak; and the Prophet ﷺ defined the covering threshold at puberty - “nothing should be seen of her except this and this,” pointing to face and hands (Abu Dawud). Fourteen centuries of scholarship uphold it; the “hijab is choice” slogan confuses Allah’s command (fixed) with the wearer’s struggle (respected) - a struggling hijabi striving imperfectly outranks a confident abandoner.
What must be covered before non-mahram men: everything except face and hands in the majority view, with the Hanbali-leaning position adding face-cover (niqab) as obligatory - both are authentic scholarship, so niqabis and face-open hijabis are sisters under one verse, never rival camps. Conditions of valid hijab: opaque, loose (shape-hidden), sober (not perfume-advertised or fame-seeking), and distinct from men’s dress - a tight “hijab-style” turban with bodycon abaya fails its own purpose whatever the scarf.
Mahram circles, age, and the hard questions
Uncovered before mahrams (father, brothers, sons, uncles, father-in-law - 24:31’s list) within modesty; full hijab before cousins, brothers-in-law (the Prophet ﷺ called the brother-in-law “death” - Bukhari/Muslim on boundary strictness), and all non-mahram men including teachers and colleagues. Girls train from ~7 and cover at puberty; elderly women past marriage-prospect have the 24:60 concession (modest relaxation without display) - every age has its ruling, none has invisibility.
Hard answers, honestly: compulsion backfires - the Quran forbids compulsion in religion’s acceptance (2:256) while commanding modesty’s practice, so fathers and husbands advise, facilitate and model, never beat or lock up. Workplace hijab-ban? Scholars permit necessity-based concessions case-by-case while seeking better exits - ask, don’t self-fatwa. Harassment is the harasser’s sin, never the victim’s scarf-fault - though hijab remains Allah’s command regardless of society’s gaze. Start where you are: add one layer this week, perfect it next month, walk to Allah and He runs to you.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is hijab compulsory or a personal choice?
Compulsory by decisive Quran verses (24:31, 33:59) and fourteen centuries of scholarship. Struggle with it is respected and rewarded; denying its obligation is the danger line.
Must the face be covered (niqab)?
The majority require everything except face and hands; a strong position adds face-covering. Both are authentic scholarship - follow qualified scholars without condemning the other view.
Can parents force hijab on daughters?
Teach, facilitate and expect - but compulsion backfires. Advise with wisdom, model modesty at home, start expectations from age seven, and make covering easy (beautiful, comfortable hijabs).
