Permanent tattoos: the ruling and its reasons

Permanent tattoos are haram by explicit text: the Prophet ﷺ cursed the tattooer and the tattooed (Bukhari/Muslim) - the curse-form signals a major sin, grouped with altering Allah’s creation (Quran 4:119). The reasons scholars cite converge: injecting impure pigment under skin, needless pain, permanent alteration without need, and imitation of corrupt cultures - any one would suffice; together they close the door firmly. Henna, temporary stickers and cosmetic designs that wash off are fully permitted alternatives.

Two mercy-rulings soften the edges without moving the line: wudu and ghusl over tattoos are valid (the pigment sits under the skin; water reaches every washable surface - the sin is in getting it, not in washing over it), and prayers of the tattooed are valid and must never be abandoned. So the tattooed Muslim prays, fasts and worships fully from today - guilt fuels repentance, never abandonment of worship.

Converts, removal, piercings and beautification lines

Pre-Islam tattoos (jihad of the past, gang years, ignorance) are wiped with conversion and repentance - no obligation to laser them if removal is costly, painful or scarring; conceal where easy (long sleeves, makeup) and let the past stay buried. For post-knowledge tattoos, scholars advise removal where affordable and safe, concealment where not - repentance plus a removal plan beats despair plus display. Never re-ink to “cover” with Islamic designs; addition compounds rather than cancels.

Piercings: women’s ear and nose piercings for adornment are permitted by custom (the Eid-jewellery hadiths assume pierced ears - Bukhari/Muslim); men imitating women’s adornment is prohibited (Bukhari’s curse on effeminate imitation); extreme/body-wide piercings fall under alteration and harm. Broader lines: eyebrow plucking for beautification is cursed in the same hadith cluster (leave medical/uni-brow-neatness to scholars’ detail), while circumcision, nail-trimming, hair-oiling and lawful adornment are fitrah - beautify within the lines Allah drew.
