Story
The full story
Uthman, the wealthy Umayyad merchant, believed early through Abu Bakr and married Ruqayyah, then after her death Umm Kulthum — “possessor of two lights,” an honour no other man holds. His shyness was such that angels felt shy before him, the Prophet ﷺ said.
His wealth became the ummah’s treasury: he bought the well of Rumah for the Muslims’ water, funded the Tabuk expedition so completely the Prophet said nothing after this day could harm Uthman, and freed slaves and fed armies from his caravans.
As caliph (23–35 AH) his greatest legacy is the mushaf: variant recitations spreading, he commissioned Zayd ibn Thabit’s committee to standardise the codex and sent copies to the provinces — every Quran printed today descends from Uthman’s decision.
Besieged by rebels demanding abdication, he refused to remove “a shirt Allah dressed him in,” and was martyred while reciting the Quran — his blood falling on 2:137. The first great fitna began at his door.
