How to
Steps in order
- 1Track your cycle dates; bleeding in-pattern within the maximum is haiz.
- 2Pause prayer, fasting, mushaf-touch and tawaf; continue dhikr and duas.
- 3At purity signs (white discharge or dryness), do ghusl and resume worship.
- 4Bleeding beyond the maximum is istihada: fresh wudu per prayer, worship normally.
- 5Make up missed Ramadan fasts day-for-day; prayers are never made up.
Durations, purity signs and the stops-resumes table
Menstruation (haiz) has a minimum of about 3 days and a maximum of 10 days in the Hanafi school, 15 days in the majority (Shafii, Maliki, Hanbali) view - bleeding within your pattern is haiz; bleeding beyond the maximum is irregular bleeding (istihada) with different rulings. Postpartum bleeding (nifas) lasts up to 40 days maximum; whenever bleeding stops and the white discharge (qassa) or complete dryness appears, purity (tuhr) has returned - do ghusl and resume worship.
During haiz and nifas, four things pause: the five prayers (no makeup owed), fasting (make up the Ramadan fasts later), touching the mushaf Quran directly (recitation from memory or devices follows school details), and entering the mosque for staying - while tawaf of Hajj/Umrah waits for purity. Dhikr, duas, listening to recitation and all daily supplications continue - menstruation never disconnects a woman from Allah.
Makeup rules, istihada and pill-affected cycles
Missed prayers during haiz are never made up - Aisha’s famous ruling: “we were ordered to make up the fasts, not the prayers” (Bukhari/Muslim). Missed Ramadan fasts are made up day-for-day before the next Ramadan where possible;fidyah feeds the chronically unable per day. Contraceptive or treatment pills that spot, skip or stretch cycles confuse the pattern - scholars advise: bleeding in habitual days counts as haiz within the maximum, continuous spotting beyond it is istihada; describe your exact pattern to a knowledgeable scholar or fatwa service rather than guessing alone.
Istihada (bleeding beyond the maximum or outside any pattern) does not stop worship: do fresh wudu for each prayer time, use a pad, and pray, fast, recite and enter mosques normally. The Prophet ﷺ told Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh exactly this - “it is a vein, not menstruation” - so perform ablution for every prayer and worship on (Sahih al-Bukhari).
