The six articles and the hadith of Jibril
When Jibril asked the Prophet ﷺ “what is iman?”, he answered: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree, good and bad (Sahih Muslim). These six are the Creed every Muslim confesses: iman-e-mufassal (“I believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and that good and evil decree is from Allah, and resurrection after death”) is simply these six memorised as a formula - teach it to every child before any other text.
Belief here means assent of the heart plus confession, crowned by deeds: iman rises with obedience and falls with sin, and deeds are its fruit and proof. The six divide the unseen world into loyalties: worship belongs to Allah alone, honour to His angels, guidance to His books crowned by the Quran, love and obedience to His messengers crowned by Muhammad ﷺ, preparation for the Last Day, and contentment with the decree. Lose one pillar and the structure leans; deny one and it falls.
What each pillar demands in daily life
Allah: worship Him alone, learn His 99 names (our Names hub), and trust His wisdom when decree pinches. Angels: honour them by avoiding what they avoid -/^lying, impurity, hanging haram images where they withhold entry (Bukhari/Muslim on image-hadith details per scholars). Books: recite the Quran daily and judge disputes by it, honouring previous scriptures’ original truth without following their altered texts. Messengers: obey Muhammad ﷺ above every taste and trend, love him beyond family and wealth, and defend his honour lawfully.
Last Day: live each evening as if the morning might not come - settle debts, forgive, repent nightly. Decree (qadr): strive with full means, then rest the heart - what missed you was never meant to hit you (Sahih Muslim). The child who can explain all six in her own words owns her faith; the adult who revisits them yearly keeps it.
