Qadr - Divine Decree & Free Will Explained

Qadr is Allah’s perfect knowledge, writing, will and creation of all things - while humans truly choose their actions and earn reward or blame.

  2. 2Take full means for every goal - then trust Allah.
  3. 3Meet calamity with patience and dua, blessing with gratitude.
  4. 4Never use Qadr to justify sin or abandon effort.

The four levels

Knowledge: Allah knew everything before creation. Writing: all is in the Preserved Tablet (Lauh Mahfuz). Will: nothing happens except by His permission. Creation: He creates all things including human acts - yet humans choose willingly.

The Prophet taught: know that what missed you was never going to hit you, and what hit you was never going to miss you (Tirmidhi).

Decree and responsibility

Decree is never an excuse for sin: the thief chooses theft and is blamed; Allah’s knowledge does not force him. We plan, strive and take means - then trust (tawakkul) the outcome to Allah.

Calamity calls for patience and dua; blessing calls for gratitude and sharing. Both are decreed, both are tests.

Frequently asked questions

If everything is decreed, why am I responsible?

Because you choose willingly. Allah’s foreknowledge records your choice; it does not force it - like a teacher predicting a student’s answer.

Can dua change Qadr?

Yes - the Prophet said nothing repels decree except dua (Tirmidhi). Dua itself is decreed as a means, so ask abundantly.

Should I be patient or strive?

Both: strive with all lawful means (that is worship), then accept the outcome with contentment (that is Iman).
