How to
Steps in order
- 1On a valid journey (~80km+, short stay): shorten Zuhr, Asr, Isha to 2 rakahs.
- 2Combine Zuhr-Asr or Maghrib-Isha at either slot when need is genuine.
- 3Behind a resident imam pray full; as traveler-imam, shorten and let them complete.
- 4When sick: stand, else sit, else lie - gesture for ruku/sujood; tayammum if water harms.
- 5At work: schedule breaks, carry a mat; never trade a fard prayer for a shift.
Qasr (shortening) and jama (combining)
Travel that permits concession is classically about 80-85 km one-way with intention of staying under ~15 days (Hanafi detail; other schools frame it by custom and need) - on a valid journey, the four-rakah prayers (Zuhr, Asr, Isha) drop to 2 rakahs each; Fajr and Maghrib stay unchanged. Praying behind a resident imam means following him fully; leading residents as a traveler means you shorten and they complete after your salam. Missing a travel prayer and making it up at home (or vice versa) follows the state of the original time, per school detail.
Combining (jama) joins Zuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha - at either time’s slot with intention - during genuine need: travel, heavy rain/mud to the mosque, Hajj stations (Arafah, Muzdalifah), illness or pressing necessity per school scope. Hanafis restrict combining mostly to Hajj; the majority permit it wider. Never combine Fajr with anything or Asr with Maghrib; keep each prayer’s order and conditions, and ask scholars for chronic cases like shift-work or polar regions.
Praying sick, seated, in bed - and prayer at work
Illness never cancels prayer, only reshapes it: pray standing, else sitting, else lying on the side facing qibla, else on the back with head raised - gestures with the head for ruku and sujood (deeper for sujood) when bowing is impossible. Hospital patients use tayammum with a dust-pad or wall when water harms, pray in bed in any clean gown, and combine when procedures scatter the day - nurses and scholars both confirm: no patient is “too sick to pray” while conscious.
At work or school, the fard prayers are non-negotiable appointments: use breaks, a quiet corner and a travel mat; combine at home where valid rather than abandoning; Friday Jumuah needs employer arrangement, not resignation-first panic - most workplaces accommodate a long lunch once asked. Missed prayers from surgery or unconsciousness follow qada rules (our qada guide); deliberate work-skipping is a debt no salary justifies.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do you pray qasr namaz?
On a valid journey, pray Zuhr, Asr and Isha as 2 rakahs instead of 4; Fajr and Maghrib unchanged. Behind a resident imam, pray full.
Which prayers can be combined?
Zuhr with Asr, and Maghrib with Isha - at either prayer’s time, during travel, illness or genuine need per school scope. Fajr is never combined.
How do you pray when sick in bed?
Sit if you can, else lie facing the qibla and gesture with the head (deeper for sujood). Use tayammum if water harms. Consciousness means prayer stays obligatory.
