How to Understand the Quran: Tafsir Method

Climb in order or drown in depth: rung one is fluent recitation (our tajweed plan) - the ear must carry the text before the mind dissects it. Rung two is a full translation read-through in your language (a reliable English or Urdu translation, cover to cover over 6-12 months at ~2 pages daily) using our meanings pages, giving the Quran’s storyline and vocabulary. Only rung three opens tafsir - and the starter order matters: a concise modern tafsir (Ibn Kathir abridged / Maududi’s abridgement / Jalalayn with notes) for narrative and rulings, then the full classical works for depth.

Rung four is Quranic Arabic itself: 300 high-frequency words unlock ~70% of the text - learn them with flashcards before grammar, then basic sarf (word-patterns) and nahw (sentence-roles) through a beginner’s Medina-book or Bayyinah-style course. One page of tafsir daily with Fajr beats weekend binges; finish one complete tafsir-reading before collecting five half-read commentaries. Understanding compounds like interest - small daily deposits, massive lifetime balance.

The 5-question verse method and tafsir manners

For any passage, ask five questions: what did the words mean to the first audience (occasion of revelation - asbab)? What do the key words literally mean (lexicon)? How did the Prophet ﷺ and companions apply it (sunnah-lens)? How does it connect to verses before and after (context-flow)? What does it demand of me this week (action)? A notebook answering these per page converts reading into transformation - the companions learned “ten verses, knowledge plus action, then moved on” (reported practice). Manners guard the student: never derive new rulings alone (ask scholars), never pit verses against hadith (the sunnah explains the Book - 16:44), never read punishment-verses as despair or mercy-verses as licence, and never debate tafsir to win - discuss to understand.
