Eid Khutbah & Missed Eid Prayer - Rulings Made Simple

The Eid khutbah comes after the prayer (unlike Jumuah), listening is sunnah, and whoever misses the congregation prays two rakahs alone - the complete rulings.

The khutbah after salam

The Prophet ﷺ always delivered the Eid khutbah after the prayer - covering gratitude, charity, family ties and (on Adha) sacrifice - and listeners stay seated as in Jumuah, though staying is sunnah rather than obligatory. The khutbah reminds of fitrana (Fitr) and qurbani (Adha) duties while the days are still open.

Umar’s practice shows the khutbah is one sitting with a short pause (not two like Jumuah); the imam holds a staff or bow, faces the people, and begins with abundant takbeer.

Missed it, late, or no congregation

Whoever misses the Eid congregation prays two rakahs alone with the extra takbirs - Anas did exactly this with his family. Latecomers join wherever the imam is and complete what they missed, as in any congregational prayer.

Stranded travelers, the sick at home and women without facilities pray the same two rakahs; the takbeer, greeting and charity sunnahs all remain available. There is no makeup khutbah.
