Eid morning has its own sunnahs before the prayer: ghusl, best clothes, odd dates (on Fitr), loud takbeer on the way, and one route out with another back.

How to
Steps in order
- 1Take Eid ghusl, wear your best and apply perfume.
- 2Eat odd dates (Fitr) or wait for the sacrifice (Adha).
- 3Recite takbeer aloud on the way, going by one route.
- 4Pray at the Eidgah, return by another route greeting everyone.
The morning routine
Take ghusl for Eid (established from Ibn Umar), wear your best clothes and apply perfume - the new-clothes dua is on our dua pages. On Eid al-Fitr eat an odd number of dates before leaving; on Eid al-Adha hold off until after the sacrifice and eat from it first.
Delay the Eid prayer slightly past sunrise so the sun fully rises, pray at the Eidgah (open ground) where possible, and go early - there is no adhan or iqamah for Eid.
Takbeer and the routes
Recite the Eid takbeer aloud from the night before (Fitr) or from Arafah dawn (Adha) - the exact wording and days are in our Eid takbeer guide. Walk to the Eidgah if able, take one route there and a different one back, greeting fellow Muslims with “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minka”.
Women, children and even menstruating women were commanded to attend the Eid gathering (the latter witnessing from aside) - arrange family attendance where facilities allow.

Dates before Eid prayer - Fitr or Adha?
Odd dates before leaving is the Fitr sunnah; on Adha the Prophet ﷺ ate only after the sacrifice - follow each Eid’s own way.
Is there any nafl at the Eidgah?
No nafl before or after the Eid prayer at the Eidgah in the Prophet’s practice; pray them at home if you wish.
What if it rains on Eid day?
The prayer moves indoors to the masjid - the sunnahs of ghusl, dress, dates and takbeer all remain.
