Daily Sunnah Prayers (Rawatib): 12 Rakahs Guide

1. 1Lock the 2 before Fajr first - never abandoned, home or travel.
2. 2Add 2 after Maghrib and 2 after Isha; then the 4-before + 2-after Zuhr set.
3. 3Pray sunnahs at home; drop them instantly if iqamah starts.
4. 4Make up a missed set later the same day rather than skipping.

The twelve and their ranking

Whoever prays twelve rakahs of sunnah daily, Allah builds him a house in Paradise (Sahih Muslim): 2 before Fajr, 4 before Zuhr, 2 after Zuhr, 2 after Maghrib, 2 after Isha. Among them the 2 before Fajr are supreme - “better than the world and all it contains” (Sahih Muslim) - the Prophet ﷺ never abandoned them, at home or traveling, while the rest he left on journeys. Their functions differ: the pre-Fajr and Zuhr sunnahs are emphasised (muakkadah); the full twelve are the Paradise-house set.

Beyond the twelve sit the non-muakkadah extras: 4 before Asr (“may Allah have mercy on one who prays four before Asr” - Abu Dawud/Tirmidhi), 2 before Maghrib and 2 before Isha (“for whoever wishes” - Bukhari/Muslim), Tahiyyatul-Masjid (2 on entering the mosque), and the 2 after wudu that admitted Bilal’s footsteps in Paradise (Bukhari/Muslim). Treat the twelve as the daily skeleton, extras as muscle.

When, where, and making them stick

Pray sunnahs at home whenever possible - “the best prayer of a man is in his home except the obligatory” (Bukhari/Muslim) - keeping the mosque for fard and the home lit with nafl, which also shields children’s tarbiyah by example. If the iqamah starts, drop the sunnah and join the fard (Sahih Muslim) - no sunnah competes with congregation. Missed rawatib can be made up later the same day (the Prophet ﷺ made up the Zuhr sunnahs after Asr - Bukhari/Muslim); scholars extend makeup windows per school.

Build the habit in ladder order: first the 2 before Fajr for 40 days, then add the Maghrib/Isha pairs, then the Zuhr set - attaching each to its fard with our prayer-times tool reminders. Travelers keep minimum the Fajr pair plus Witr; the sick pray seated with full reward of intention. Twelve small rakahs daily outweigh occasional Tahajjud marathons abandoned by spring.
