How to

Steps in order

  1. 1Memorise the gelatin line: pork never, fish always, beef only zabiha-certified.
  2. 2Flag enzymes (rennet, lipase, pepsin) and email makers for sources.
  3. 3Check E120, E441, E471, E422, E904 against a halal E-list.
  4. 4Run the 60-second label check on sweets, yogurt, capsules every shop.
  5. 5Default to certified or vegetarian-flagged when rushed; avoid obsession.

Gelatin and enzymes: source decides everything

Gelatin rule in one line: pork gelatin is haram always (60-80% of Western food gelatin), fish gelatin is halal always, beef gelatin is halal only from zabiha-slaughtered cattle - and “beef gelatin” without halal certification is mushbooh (doubtful), not halal. Plain “gelatin” on a Western label defaults to assume-haram; “suitable for vegetarians,” “gelatin-free,” or certified logos (HMC, HFA, IFANCA, JAKIM, MUI) flip it safe. Sweets, yogurts, marshmallows and capsules are the four ambush categories - check every one, every time.

Enzymes hide behind single words: rennet (calf-stomach - haram unless zabiha/microbial/vegetable; most big brands now use microbial - verify), lipase and pepsin (often porcine - haram), whey Powders (cheese-source dependent), and “enzymes” generically (mushbooh until the manufacturer confirms microbial/plant origin). One email to the manufacturer settles months of doubt - ask “is your rennet/lipase animal-derived, and if so from what species and slaughter?” and keep the reply.

E-numbers, carmine, glycerin - and the 60-second check

High-risk E-numbers: E120 carmine/cochineal (crushed insects - haram by majority), E441 gelatin (source rule above), E471 mono-/diglycerides (animal-fat or plant - mushbooh until verified), E422 glycerin/glycerol (same source split), E904 shellac (insect resin on candies/pills - majority haram), and E542 bone phosphate. Alcohol-carried flavourings (“natural flavours”) follow our medicine-perfume guide’s intoxication test - non-intoxicating carriers permitted, intoxicating ones out. Bookmark one updated halal E-number list rather than memorising codes.

The 60-second label check: one, scan for the four ambush words (gelatin, rennet, lipase, carmine); two, look for certification logos or vegetarian flags; three, check E471/E422/E120 codes; four, when anything is mushbooh, photograph the label and email the maker - then choose a verified alternative meanwhile. Travelling or rushed? Default to certified, vegetarian-flagged, or whole foods - caution here is piety, not paranoia (our waswasa guide draws the line at obsession: systematic checking is worship; torment over settled answers is whispers).
