Reality, symptoms and prevention
The evil eye is real by decisive texts: “The eye is real (al-aynu haqq)” (Bukhari/Muslim), and most afflictions after Allah’s decree come through it. Its signs are sudden, otherwise-unexplained harm after admiration or envy - a healthy child falling ill, wealth or beauty struck without medical cause - while ordinary illness remains ordinary illness: see a doctor first, then treat spiritually alongside.
Prevention is three habits: say “MashaAllah, la quwwata illa billah” (or “Allahumma barik alayh”) whenever you admire anything - your own or others’ - because blessing the admired thing blocks the eye; recite morning-evening adhkar and the three Quls nightly; and avoid publicising blessings (babies, weddings, wealth) to audiences with no need to know.
Treatment: the washing ritual and self-ruqyah
If the envier is identified (or volunteers), the Prophet’s prescribed cure is ghusl-wudu washing: the person washes face, hands, elbows, knees and feet-sides into a vessel, and the water is poured over the afflicted from behind in one pour (Sahih Muslim; Sunan Abu Dawud). Ask gently without accusation - “the eye” can strike unintentionally, even from a loving parent - and no knowledgeable Muslim refuses this washing when asked.
