How to

Steps in order

  1. 1Classify the dream: glad tidings, satanic distress, or day-residue self-talk.
  2. 2Good dream: praise Allah, share only with loved ones, ask for its good.
  3. 3Nightmare: dry-spit left 3x, seek refuge, turn sides, pray if awake, tell no one.
  4. 4Guard sleep nightly: wudu, Ayatul-Kursi, last two Baqarah verses, triple-Quls.
  5. 5Never decide marriages or money on dreams; ignore paid dream-tellers.

Three types and the strict limits of interpretation

The Prophet ﷺ divided dreams into three: glad tidings from Allah (ruya saliha - true dreams, one forty-sixth of prophethood), distressing dreams from Satan (hulm - designed to grieve you), and self-talk from the day’s concerns (Bukhari/Muslim). True dreams cluster around truthful people and the last of the night before Fajr; most vivid modern dreams are type three - the brain replaying the day - not messages requiring decoders.

Interpretation (tabir) is real - Yusuf’s surah is its proof - but its limits are strict: no fixed dictionary (“snake always means X”) exists in the sources; symbols shift by person, culture and context; and only the knowledgeable interpret, privately, with “khayran inshaAllah” hedging. Ignore social-media dream-tellers demanding money or personal details, and never make marriage, divorce or money decisions on a dream alone - istikhara plus counsel decide, dreams at most comfort.

What to do after good dreams and nightmares

After a good dream: praise Allah, share it only with those who love you (Yusuf 12:5 warns envy follows advertised dreams), and ask Allah for its good - never boast. After a nightmare: spit dryly (nafth) to the left three times, seek refuge (“A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim” plus the bad-dream dua on our dua pages), turn to the other side, pray two rakahs if awake, and tell no one - “it will not harm him” (Bukhari/Muslim). The nightmare protocol works the first night; repeating it nightly for recurring dreams plus Ayatul-Kursi and the triple-Quls before sleep ends most episodes.

Recurring terrifying dreams with sleep paralysis or waking dread deserve both paths: the nightly shield (wudu, Ayatul-Kursi, last two Baqarah verses, triple-Quls with wiping - our sleep duas page) and a doctor’s check for sleep disorders, trauma or medication effects. Satan exploits the exhausted - guard the pre-sleep adhkar like a door lock, and teach children the same three Quls routine from our ruqyah-for-children dua.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do dreams mean in Islam?

Three types: true glad tidings from Allah, distressing dreams from Satan, and day-residue self-talk. Most vivid dreams are the third - not messages. Symbols have no fixed dictionary.

What should I do after a bad dream?

Dry-spit to the left three times, seek refuge with Allah, recite the bad-dream dua, turn to the other side, pray if awake, and tell no one - it will not harm you (Bukhari/Muslim).

Can dreams tell the future or guide decisions?

True dreams comfort but never legislate: never decide marriage, divorce or money on a dream. Use istikhara and counsel; treat paid dream-interpreters as frauds.
