The fasting method
Fast the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) - expiation for the past year’s sins (Muslim) - joined with the 9th (or 11th) to differ from previous communities: “if I live till next year I will fast the 9th too” (Muslim). Musa fasted it in thanks for deliverance from Pharaoh; the Prophet ﷺ fasted it and ordered it before Ramadan’s obligation.
The new Hijri year opens with Muharram - the Sahaba’s new-year dua (on our dua pages) greets it. Make the month a fasting month generally: “the best of fasting after Ramadan is Allah’s month Muharram” (Muslim).
Karbala: honour without innovation
On Ashura 61H, Husayn (RA) and his family were martyred at Karbala - love for them and grief at injustice are Islamic; self-flagellation, chest-beating, wailing gatherings and cursing the companions are not. Mourning in Islam is three days (a widow’s iddah excepted) - annual theatrical mourning contradicts the sunnah of patience.
