Story

The full story

Abu Bakr, the Makkan merchant of spotless reputation, believed the moment the Prophet ﷺ told him — without hesitation, earning the title Siddiq (the Truthful). He spent his wealth freeing tortured slaves: Bilal, Amir ibn Fuhayrah and others bought at crushing prices and freed for Allah alone (92:17–21 were revealed, scholars note, concerning such giving).

Chosen for the Hijrah, he travelled with the Prophet ﷺ and hid three nights in the cave of Thawr — the “second of the two” (9:40). In Madinah he stood at every battle, gave all his wealth at Tabuk (“what did you leave for your family? Allah and His Messenger”), and led the prayers during the Prophet’s final illness.

When the Prophet ﷺ passed, Umar rose denying it — Abu Bakr calmed the crisis with history’s most stabilising words: whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad is dead; whoever worships Allah, Allah is Ever-Living. Then he recited 3:144, and the ummah breathed again.

As caliph (11–13 AH) he fought the Ridda wars preserving Islam itself, dispatched Usama’s army, began the Quran’s compilation after Yamama’s martyrs, and nominated Umar — dying with the instruction that leadership is a trust, not a prize.

Narrated from the seerah and hadith collections without invented details.
