Story

The full story

Thamud succeeded Ad in power, carving homes from mountains and building palaces on plains (7:73–74). Their brother Salih called: worship Allah — He produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so seek His forgiveness and turn to Him (11:61). The arrogant chiefs sneered at the believing poor: do you know Salih is sent? We deny what you believe, they answered (7:75–76).

The people demanded the sign on their own terms — bring us what you threaten, if you are a messenger (7:77). The sign came alive: this is Allah’s she-camel, a sign for you — leave her to graze on Allah’s earth, touch her with no harm, lest a near torment seize you (7:73, 11:64). Her drink was appointed by turns, day about (26:155–156, 54:28).

Nine corrupters of the city plotted the sacrilege; the most wretched of them stepped forward and hamstrung her (27:48–49, 54:29, 91:12). Salih warned: enjoy your homes three more days — an unbroken promise (11:65). They even plotted to kill him by night, swearing to deny the murder (27:49).

When the term came, the mighty blast seized the wrongdoers, and morning found them lifeless in their homes — as though they had never dwelt there (11:67–68). Salih turned away: my people, I conveyed my Lord’s message and advised you — but you do not love advisers (7:79).
