Story
The full story
Dawud entered history as the youth in Talut’s ranks who slew Jalut, and Allah gave him kingship and wisdom (2:251). The Quran’s emphasis, though, falls on his worship and craft rather than his battles: mountains and birds were commanded to echo his praise, and the Psalms (Zabur) were given to him (21:79–80, 34:10).
Iron was softened in his hands — fashion long coats of mail, measure the links precisely — and he was taught the craft as gratitude’s duty: work righteousness (21:80, 34:10–11). His voice was such that mountains joined at dawn and dusk, and his fasting — half of all time — with night prayer of measured thirds became the beloved pattern (reports in Sahih collections).
As judge he was tested by two litigants climbing the sanctuary wall — one with ninety-nine ewes demanding his brother’s single ewe (38:21–24). Dawud judged swiftly, then realised the trial, fell bowing, and was forgiven — and the Quran draws the ruling: judge between people with truth and follow not desire (38:26).
His legacy flows into Sulayman — and into every craftsman who measures links precisely as worship.
