Story
The full story
Fourteen hundred pilgrims in ihram were blocked at Hudaybiyyah. The treaty terms stung: return this year, surrender Makkan converts, a ten-year truce. Umar protested; the Prophet ﷺ signed - and the Quran called it a manifest victory (48:1).
Peace did what war could not: in two years, conversions doubled the community. Makkah’s own allies broke the truce, and the Prophet ﷺ marched with ten thousand.
Makkah opened almost bloodlessly. At the Kaaba he smashed the idols reciting: truth has come, falsehood has vanished (17:81).
Then the general amnesty - go, you are free - turned yesterday’s persecutors into tomorrow’s companions. Conquest ended in forgiveness, not revenge.
Narrated from widely transmitted histories without invented details.
