Story

The full story

A Makkan army of about a thousand marched to crush the 313 Muslims who had come out for a caravan, not a battle. The Prophet ﷺ consulted his companions; Miqdad and Sad ibn Muadh pledged obedience - into the sea if ordered.

The night before Badr, rain firmed the Muslim ground and softened the enemy’s; the Prophet ﷺ prayed until dawn: if this band perishes, You will not be worshipped on earth. Seventy Makkans fell, seventy were captured.

Captives were ransomed - and the literate among them bought freedom by teaching ten Madinan children to read. Even victory served literacy.

The Quran named it the Day of Criterion (8:41): proof that preparation plus reliance beats arithmetic.

Narrated from widely transmitted histories without invented details.
