Story
The full story
Abdullah ibn Masud — a shepherd for Uqbah — met the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr seeking milk; a miracle of milk from a dry ewe converted him on the spot, among the very first six. His thin legs would one day outweigh mountains, the Prophet joked, watching him climb.
When the companions asked who would recite aloud at the Kaaba, Ibn Masud volunteered — and recited Ar-Rahman before stunned Quraysh until they beat him bloody. He returned smiling: never were Allah’s enemies lighter to me. The first public recitation cost blood and bought honour.
In Madinah he became the Prophet’s personal attendant — carrying his sandals, pillow and water — and a reciter the Prophet himself requested: recite for me, though it was revealed to you? I love hearing it from others. Ibn Masud wept him through An-Nisa’s “witness” verse.
Sent to Kufa as teacher with “a treasure I prefer you over myself” (Umar’s words), he founded its recitation and law school — dying in Madinah (32 AH), buried in Baqi by Zubayr’s prayer.
