Story

The full story

Abdur-Rahman ibn Sakhr of Daws — nicknamed Abu Hurairah, father of the kitten, for the cat in his sleeve — arrived in Madinah in Khaybar’s year with nothing but hunger. While Muhajirun traded and Ansar farmed, he clung to the Prophet’s ﷺ company, filling his stomach with knowledge.

Complaining of forgetting, the Prophet spread his cloak, gestured pouring into it, and told him to press it to his chest — after which, Abu Hurairah said, he never forgot a thing he heard. Hunger became humanity’s library.

He narrated over five thousand hadith — worship, manners, mercy — more than any companion, precisely because he owned nothing to distract him. Marwan tested him once, hiding a scribe: a year later the rehearing matched word for word.

Governor of Bahrain under Umar, then Madinah’s teacher till death (59 AH) — buried in Baqi, the kitten-father whose memory feeds a billion’s practice.

Narrated from the seerah and hadith collections without invented details.
