The full story
Before his birth Allah fixed his unprecedented name: We give you glad tidings of a boy named Yahya — We have granted no namesake before (19:7). The naming itself was miracle — a name never used, for a child never expected.
As a boy he was given wisdom with strength: O Yahya, hold the Scripture firmly — and We granted him judgment in childhood (19:12). The Quran’s portrait lists his qualities in sequence: compassion from Us, purity, God-consciousness, dutifulness to his parents — neither arrogant nor defiant (19:13–14).
He confirmed a word from Allah — the coming Isa — and lived as noble, chaste (hasur) and prophetic (3:39). Chastity here is honour, not lack: mastery over desire in a corrupt courtly age.
His epitaph is triple peace, shared only with Isa: peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive (19:15). Tradition holds he was martyred for truth — peace surrounds even that day.
