The full story
Zayd ibn Thabit — Madinan youth, orphan raised on Quran — was set by the Prophet ﷺ to learn Hebrew/Syriac for correspondence, mastering it in weeks. He became the revelation’s scribe: dictation taken fresh, verified aloud, preserved on whatever lay near.
After Yamama’s martyrs devoured reciters, Umar pressed reluctant Abu Bakr — and Abu Bakr pressed reluctant Zayd: gather the Quran. “Harder than moving a mountain,” he said — then did it, accepting nothing without two witnesses, refusing even his own memory unsupported.
Under Uthman, when variants spread with expanding armies, Zayd chaired the standardisation committee: the Uthmanic codex, Quraysh dialect prevailing, copies dispatched to the provinces. Every mushaf descends from his committee’s ink.
Scholar, judge, translator, treasurer under three caliphs — dying (45 AH) with Ibn Abbas holding his stirrup: this is how scholars are honoured, the scholar said of the scholar.
