The full story
Abdullah ibn Abbas — the Prophet’s cousin, thirteen at the passing — prepared his wudu water one night; the Prophet, pleased, embraced him praying: O Allah, teach him the Book. The dua outlived the embrace by seventy years of tafsir.
He chased knowledge like debt-collection: sleeping at companions’ doors in noon heat, waiting for naps to end rather than knocking — then sitting at their feet for verses’ occasions. An ocean assembled drop by drop.
Umar seated the beardless youth among Badr veterans, silencing greybeards’ frowns by testing him on Surah Nasr — the boy’s exegesis (it announces the end) outshone them all. Ali later made him Basra’s teacher; his circles taught tafsir, law and poetry in one sitting.
