The full story
Kidnapped as a boy and gifted to Khadijah, then to Muhammad ﷺ, Zayd was freed — and when his grieving father arrived to ransom him, the Prophet gave him the choice. Zayd chose his master over his father: I have seen from this man what makes me never prefer another. Adoption followed; he was called Zayd ibn Muhammad until 33:5 restored lineages — yet love kept the title “the beloved.”
The Quran names him — the only companion named in the Book (33:37) — in the verse ending adoption-as-lineage while honouring his marriage story. Named in eternity for choosing love over blood.
Commander at Mu’tah against impossible odds: the Prophet ordered the banner through Zayd, then Ja’far, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah — all three fell, and Khalid sheathed the army home. Zayd led first into that furnace.
His son Usama — beloved’s son, doubly beloved — would command the very men who doubted him. Devotion compounds across generations.
