The full story
Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah believed early, endured, and migrated to Madinah — where the Prophet ﷺ named him Amin of this ummah, its most trustworthy man. Trust became his biography’s single word.
At Uhud he saw two helmet rings driven into the Prophet’s ﷺ cheek: he pulled one with his teeth — a front tooth breaking with it — then the second, losing another. “Whoever wishes to see a martyr walking,” the pattern went, “look at Talha” — but Abu Ubaydah’s teeth bought the same sentence with pliers of loyalty.
Umar’s most trusted commander: he replaced Khalid over Syria without a ripple — Khalid himself served under him. Yarmouk, Damascus, Jerusalem’s surrender terms — all under the Amin’s seal. When plague struck Amwas, Umar rode to recall him; Abu Ubaydah refused to desert his army.
He died of the plague (18 AH) after appointing Muadh, writing Umar that the ummah’s trust was spent guarding others. Umar wept: if Abu Ubaydah lived, the succession would need no Shura.
