Story
The full story
Yaqub, son of Ishaq, inherited prophethood and fathered twelve sons — the tribes (2:136). When Yusuf told his dream of eleven stars, sun and moon prostrating, Yaqub warned him to hide it from jealous brothers and foresaw Allah’s favour (12:4–6). The brothers’ plot soon left Yusuf in a well and Yaqub holding a bloodied shirt — he answered with the sentence of every grieving believer: beautiful patience, and Allah’s help is sought (12:17–18).
Years later famine drove the brothers to Egypt, where Yusuf — now minister — detained Binyamin by the king’s cup. The brothers returned with a second blow: your son has stolen. Yaqub answered again: perhaps Allah will bring them all to me; He is the Knowing, Wise — and his eyes whitened with grief, though he restrained himself (12:83–84).
Mocked for remembering Yusuf after so long, he replied: I complain of my anguish only to Allah, and I know from Allah what you know not (12:86). He sent them back: despair not of Allah’s relief — none despairs except disbelievers (12:87).
When the bearer of glad tidings cast Yusuf’s shirt on his face, his sight returned — did I not tell you I know from Allah what you know not (12:96). The family prostrated in Egypt; the childhood dream stood fulfilled (12:99–100). On his deathbed Yaqub gathered his sons: whom will you worship after me? They answered: your God and our fathers’ God — One Allah, to Him we submit (2:132–133).
