Story

The full story

Uthman, the modest caliph of twelve years, was besieged in his home by rebels and martyred reciting the Quran. The ummah had killed its ruler - grief and fury demanded justice, urgently and differently understood.

Ali took the pledge; Talha, Zubayr and Aisha demanded immediate qisas. The armies met at Jamal near Basra - then Siffin between Ali and Muawiyah, where arbitration was accepted and then disputed.

This page takes no camp: the companions on all sides are honoured, their ijtihad respected, the bloodshed mourned. Scholarship’s consensus is restraint of tongue about their disputes.

The lesson drawn by the scholars: fitna begins with unchecked rumour and ends only when justice runs through process, not vengeance.

Narrated from widely transmitted histories without invented details.
