The full story
Raised in the Prophet’s ﷺ own house, Ali believed as a boy of ten — the first youth in Islam. On the Hijrah night he slept in the Prophet’s bed under assassin swords, buying the hours that saved the mission.
In Madinah he married Fatima; their home joined the Prophet’s mosque wall. At Badr, Uhud and Khandaq he fought in the front rank; at Khaybar, after the standard passed from hand to hand, the Prophet gave it to Ali — and the fortress gate he tore off became legend. “Tomorrow I give the banner to one who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom they love.”
His knowledge was proverbial: the gate of the city of knowledge, the judge of Yemen whose rulings the Prophet upheld. His sayings — on justice, greed, silence — fill Nahj al-Balagha’s attributed treasury.
As caliph (35–40 AH) he ruled through civil war with principle intact, moved the capital to Kufa, and was struck by Ibn Muljam in Fajr prayer — dying with the cry: by the Lord of the Kaaba, I have succeeded.
