Story
The full story
Muawiyah founded the caliphate in Damascus (41 AH), moving rule to Syria’s seasoned administration. Within decades, Tariq crossed to Spain while Muhammad ibn Qasim reached Sindh - the empire touched the Atlantic and the Indus.
Abd al-Malik Arabised the bureaucracy and coinage and raised the Dome of the Rock (72 AH) - the oldest surviving Islamic monument, its mosaics proclaiming tawhid over the holy city.
Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz’s brief reign (99-101 AH) showed the dynasty’s conscience: taxes reformed, governors recalled, the famous dark spot of justice in a century of kings.
Dysfunction and Abbasid preaching ended Umayyad rule in 132 AH - but one prince, Abd al-Rahman, escaped to Spain and founded Cordoba’s emirate: the dynasty’s second life.
Narrated from widely transmitted histories without invented details.
