Zakariya — A Son in Old Age

Zakariya guarded Maryam in the sanctuary; whenever he entered her chamber he found provision — out-of-season fruits — and asked where it came from: it is from Allah, who provides whom He wills without measure (3:37). Provision witnessed became provision sought.

Thereupon, in old age with a barren wife and white hair, he called his Lord privately: my bones have weakened, my head shines white, yet never have I been unblessed in my prayers (19:3–4, 3:38). His plea: grant me from Yourself a pure offspring — an heir of me and of Jacob’s house, pleasing to You (3:38, 19:5–6).

The answer came while he stood praying: Allah gives you glad tidings of Yahya, confirming a word from Allah — noble, chaste, a prophet among the righteous (3:39). He asked for a sign; the sign was three days of silence except gestures, with much remembrance morning and evening (3:41, 19:10).

Father and son are paired in the guidance roll — each favoured, each righteous (6:83–87). Old age, barrenness and silence all surrendered to a whispered prayer.
